Planet Earth: Up, Close and Personal in Your Drawing RoomBy sachiv1, Section Environment
Locales, this breathtaking have never been frequented by any human before. Flora and fauna, with their riot of colours, looks too close at hand. Sounds and effects that promise to enchant. Discovery Channel, this February 1, 2007, brings in the bouquet of adventure, knowledge, geography and wildlife, right into your drawing rooms, with its gift of the 11- part series called, Planet Earth. The programme will be aired every Thursday at 8 pm with repeat telecasts on Saturday at 6 pm and on Sunday at 2 pm.
Being touted as the ultimate portrayal of the Mother Earth, the show will run consecutively for 11 weeks, simultaneously in Hindi and English, each episode an hour long. More than Rs 100 crore have been invested to put together this in-house production which will be aired globally. The series has been shot in 200 locations in all the continents, including south and north east India. Around 40 crew members have toiled and travelled to the most inaccessible places continuously for five years to bring to the viewers a show that is quintessentially "Discovery".
Rajiv Bakshi, associate director, marketing and communications, Discovery Networks India, said: "By the use of High Definition technology, the pictures are brighter, sharper, more clear and realistic. This series should define television viewing in the coming years. Shooting of all the 11 episodes have been completed. The legendary nature historian Sir David Attenborough has lent his voice for narration and we have the famed Alastair Fothergill as our executive producer."
Bakshi further said that Discovery being the strongest niche channel in the genre, this series should win critical as well as commercial acclaim. "Our objective is to provide an unparalleled view of the awe-inspiring landscapes from across the globe and incredible footage of the rarely spotted, almost mythical creatures that live in these habitats. There are also episodes featuring stories about how animals hibernate and migrate depending on extreme climatic conditions. Though it is too early to tell but we are sure that this brave and beautiful production will bring awards in our kitty," Bakshi said. So here's for the nature lovers the towering peaks of Nepal, the cherry blossoms of Japan, the lush greens of the Amazon, the dry-sculpted crescents of the Kalahari desert and the glistening polar icecaps, all at the click of a button. A rare gift of flora, fauna and planet Earth from Discovery Channel. (Source-Indian Express,26/01/07)
