State Plans Aircraft Maintenance HubBy Dr arvind, Section Development
A dedicated centre for aircraft maintenance run by Indian and foreign airlines could come up in West Bengal. State transport minister Subhas Chakraborty said on Wednesday that a proposal has come to the state government on this issue. The minister, however, refused to elaborate on the project.
"A proposal has come for setting up an aircraft maintenance unit spread over 5000 acres. However, it's an expensive proposition for each airline to have its own maintenance unit. A dedicated unit will be beneficial for all," Chakraborty said. He made this declaration at the launch of a sales management course for motor car dealers designed by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA) and Institute of Business Management and Research. The project will be along the lines of an "airtropolis" with not just aircraft maintenance but a host of ancillary industries. And West Bengal's geographical position midway between the Atlantic and Pacific sectors is perceived as a major advantage for the state. This would not only ensure the feasibility of the project for the Indian companies but will help in getting airlines from abroad. "The project will be like a hub airport for both cargo and air maintenance," said a source.
The state government has primarily identified a lowland in North 24-Parganas for the centre to come up. A final decision on the site is still awaited. The minister, however, would not hazard a comment.
The FADA academy will train sales personnel for motor car dealers in the state. "There is a definite need for such professional courses. Transport sector is the largest source for employment in the world. Skilled manpower falls far short of the required number," said Chakraborty. The FADA president Binod Agarwal said that the requirement of the industry was growing fast. "In this financial year, there has been a 20% growth in the domestic vehicle sales and 35% in the commercial vehicle sector. We will need more people to handle the increasing customer base," said Agarwal. From:- TOI, JAN-25,07
