Helping Muslim Women Fight for Their RightsBy sachiv1, Section Civic Problems in Kolkata
While the alliance will have volunteers from all sections of society, it says that around 70 per cent of its membership will be offered exclusively to Muslim women
Around 20 organisations, including small and reputed ones, have joined hands to motivate Muslim women to avail themselves of their rights. The newly-formed alliance being projected as the state chapter of the recently-formed Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Aandolan, a national network of regional organisations has representatives from Action Aid, Right Track, Calcutta Samaritans, Smokus, Women' Study Research Unit, University of Calcutta, among others. "We intend to bring Muslim women out of their homes and help them fight for their rights," said Mitali Sen, an official associated with the regional alliance.
The organisations that have so far met at the national level and also at the state level have said that their intention is to help Muslim women understand their rights. "Muslim women, especially those living in rural areas, do not understand their rights as they do not have access to a proper interpretation of laws," she said. From the looks of it, women would be encouraged to fight for rights within the religious framework.
In the first meeting, held a few weeks ago, around 45 participants enrolled themselves for a brainstorming session. While the alliance will have volunteers from all sections of society, it says that around 70 per cent of its membership will be offered exclusively to Muslim women. Another representative of the alliance told Newsline that the organisations are also taking up the Sachar committee report and will carry out a fresh survey on the status of the Muslim community in the districts of the state. "It is the women who are the worst victims of backwardness. The activists will go to the districts and come up with recommendations based on the findings of the Sachar committee," said the representative. (Source-Indian express,24/01/07)
