Dalmiya Too Told Sports Minister to Quit RaceBy sachiv1, Section Sports & Fun
Jagmohan Dalmiya was among the people who advised State Transport Minister Subhas Chakraborty to pull out of the race for the CAB president's post. According to a source in the Dalmiya camp, the former cricket chief had a long talk with Chakraborty over the phone late last night, during which he coaxed the minister not to contest the polls.
"Subhas was under pressure (from the CPM) in the last few days to back out of the elections. So, after a lot of calculations and discussions with Maidan veterans, Dalmiya told Subhas to give it up last night," said the source. Apparently, Dalmiya is already conceding "interim defeat", but is planning to upstage his opponents in the July-end CAB elections again. The CAB source revealed that there was a distinct change in Dalmiya's plans in the run-up to the elections once it became clear that the Sports Minister would have to back out.
"With Subhas out of the equation, Dalmiya faced a difficult fight as the search for a suitable high-profile candidate was going nowhere," said the source. "That's why Dalmiya is now planning to field a nominal candidate this time round former Bengal cricketer Premangshu Chatterjee or P B Dutta just to ascertain how much he's worth in the vote pie," he added.
The Dalmiya camp hopes to garner around 40-50 votes against the Police Commissioner's 60-70 in the 121-vote pie. "Once Dalmiya gets to know how many clubs vote for him despite the lack of a high-profile candidate, he will know exactly how to go about his campaigning for the July-end elections. Till then, he is taking the probable victory of the Police Commissioner in stride," said the source. Dalmiya, who resigned as the CAB boss on December 27, is planning to take the BCCI to Court next Monday to challenge the life ban imposed on him that forced him to quit the top job. Dalmiya hopes to overturn the cricket board's ban and make a fresh bid for the CAB president's post in July-end, at the AGM that could witness an acrimonious battle between the followers of Prasun Mukherjee and Dalmiya.
