Work on the kilometre-long flyover connecting EM Bypass to VIP Road will begin in February. The EM Bypass-VIP Road flyover has been planned to ease traffic congestion at the Ultadanga junction.

"The pre-qualification process is over. Bidding papers will be submitted to the government to enable it to select a company to execute the project," said a senior official of Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA). Work on the project is expected to begin next month.

`Bengal-CES', appointed by Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority to oversee the pre-qualification and technical bidding process for the project, has shortlisted seven companies to execute the project. These companies had received more than 70 out of 100 points in the prequalification bidding process. Two of
the seven companies-- Simplex Infrastructure Limited and Afcons Infrastructure Limited received a maximum of 91.75 points in the process. The authorities will now decide which of the two firms will execute the Rs 40-crore project.

Of the remaining five, Nagarjuna Construction Company Limited and Navayuga Engineering Company were ranked third and fourth with scores of 90.50 points and 81 points respectively.

Next in line was ITD Cementation Limited, scoring 79.65 points, while Bridge and Roof with 79.25 points and Tantia Constructions Limited with 77.54 points were ranked sixth and seventh respectively.

KMDA will begin the execution of the project, under the National Urban Renewal Mission (NURM) scheme, with its own finances.

Under NURM norms, 35% of the project cost will be borne by the Centre and 15% by the state government while the remaining 50% will be collected as loans and grants.

A 6.2-acre plot off EM Bypass, where a five star hotel will come up, has fetched KMDA a whopping Rs 209 crore. Besides, real estate major DLF, which bagged the contract to develop Dankuni township, agreed to pay Rs 2,713 crore for 5010 acre of land.

The authorities have already received Rs 570 crore from these deals. "We will utilise some amount of this money to execute our projects," said an official. Apart from the EM Bypass-VIP Road flyover, KMDA also plans a Parama Island-Park Circus flyover and a Vivekananda Road flyover project from these funds.
