Asian Development Bank and the Union urban development ministry want to study Kolkata Municipal Corporation's track record with regard to water supply, taking into account production, distribution and efforts to minimise wastage. The proposal came after KMC sought Rs 500 crore to overhaul its water supply system.
At a recent national seminar on water supply in Chennai, ADB handed Bivas Maity, chief engineer of KMC's water supply department, a questionnaire, which the civic body would have to submit as a precondition to getting the loan. The Union urban development ministry has also sought a report on water supply in the city before considering the release of a grant.
KMC water supply engineers are now gearing up to answer ADB's questionnaire and submit a report to the Centre as soon as possible. A preliminary study shows that though a whopping 220 million gallons of water is produced at Palta Waterworks, up to 35% of it is wasted.
