State seeks Army help to build bridge on National Highway 2By Dr arvind, Section Roads in Kolkata
The state government is taking the help of the Army to construct a bridge on National Highway-2, a portion of which caved in two days ago. Rail tracks in Asansol were also widened today. Talks were held with the Army for constructing a bridge in the affected area on an emergency basis.
Chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said, "We have to construct a temporary bridge in Asansol . We discussed the issue with the Army and it has been asked to construct the bridge." The director of National Highway Authority of India is scheduled to be in Kolkata tomorrow and meet chief secretary Amit Kiran Deb to find a way out of the problem. Meanwhile, authorities decided to slow down the trains, including Rajdhani and Satabdi Express, to only 20 km per hour while running between Asansol and Kalipahar stations. A meeting was held at Asansol which was attended by Manish Jain, district magistrate, Burdwan, Ajay Rawat, DRM, Asansol, Piyush Pandey, district police super and Nirmal Mondol, project director of NH-2 among other people.
"We are trying to shut down the stretch of national highway which has been affected and find an alternative route. As the process is both time consuming and expensive, we are discussing the matter," said Mondol.
Today soil samples were also taken from the affected area, including NH-2, by experts of mines safety of Eastern Coalfields Limited, to find out a reason behind the cracks. Cracks first appeared at the NH-2, in Chatrapathor village near Asansol town and rail tracks in the region last Tuesday. The cracks widened with time and authorities had to close the highway stretch in the process affecting vehicular transport. As both main line and the chord line was affected due to the cracks, trains, including long distance ones, were reduced to a speed of 70 km per hour.
