A Food City is Coming to Town

Foodies, raise the toast. Coming soon to your city is an all new food experience. Now, you can eat out, stock up your kitchen and even throw a party, all under the same roof. The mega food city, occupying 60,000 sq ft of prime space at Ballygunge, will have a 300-seater food court, a bakery, a confectionery, a giant food mart and banquet halls spread over six floors. The food court will serve Indian, Chinese and Continental dishes to 4,000-5,000 customers daily.

Fourteen years after he ventured into the family business with a tiny shop on Chowringhee, Pratik Food Products director Mahesh Agarwal is ready to gift the city its largest food store — Haldiram Food City. “The spread at the Syed Amir Ali Avenue address will be much more lavish than Chowringhee. We are venturing beyond traditional Indian sweets to add bakery, confectionery, icecream, chocolate and low-fat/low-sugar sections. These counters will be on the ground floor. The second floor will house the food court,” Mahesh said.

For the bakery and confectionery division, Mahesh has roped in celebrity chef Shaun Kenworthy. For the latter, this will be the first attempt to rustle up goodies and pastries without using egg.

Also part of the retail section is a giant food mart on the third floor. The third and fourth floors comprise the service section with two large banquets, each capable of accommodating up to 800 guests. While the banquet hall on the third floor can be split into two, that on the fourth floor can be split in three to host five parties/functions at a time. On the sixth floor is the kitchen, bakery, store and staff area.
