US Firms See Bandhs as Black Spots in `Favourable' BengalBy sachiv1, Section News
American companies operating in eastern India view West Bengal as a favourable place for business, but for the region's poor infrastructure and the frequent bandhs in West Bengal, according to a survey to be released Thursday.
The business perception survey, conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers for the nine-month-old Kolkata chapter of Amcham, sought the views of its members as well as other US companies operating here on issues like cost of doing business, virtual connectivity, quality of people and infrastructure, among other things. The survey was done in the first week of December and the detailed findings are to be released tomorrow after the first-ever meeting of its national board here.
GK Sachdev, managing director of Quaker Chemical India Ltd and chairman of Amcham's Kolkata chapter, said the members of the national board would later meet Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and brief him about their progress since their first interaction last June.
According to Aniruddha Lahiri, an Amcham official and president of the Chatterjee group, the chief minister had welcomed the formation of the Kolkata chapter of Amcham, and has sought the chambers help in fostering cooperation between US universities and their counterparts here in specific areas like biotechnology. "The chief minister is also keen on US investments in the state's petrochemicals and chemicals sector," Lahiri said. The Amcham, which has 480 members in India, represents wholly-owned or majority-owned US companies. The Kolkata chapter was set up with nine members on March 28 last year, and has since grown to 23.
