From the sheriff to a prostitute, from an actress to a tram conductor. Come January 22, and West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi is going to have an interactive session with a wide array of people at least 20 from different fields at Raj Bhavan. The programme will be telecast on DD on January 26.

Deviating from the previous practice of just delivering a speech on Republic Day, the Governor initiated the move for an interactive session with people from a cross-section of society last year. The programme is expected to last for 50 minutes.

Among the list of participants who have been chosen this year are Kolkata Sheriff Sachindranath Dutta, painter Ramananda Bandopadhyay, actress Gargi Roy Choudhury, IT professional Partha Chatterjee, a rickshaw-puller, a police constable, a milkman, a railway employee, a school teacher and a prostitute. Renowned quiz master Derek O' Brien has been roped in to compere the event.

"I have received information about this and I am definitely looking forward to it. People ruling the country should take a lesson from the Governor  sitting in the ivory tower of power, one cannot learn the problems of the society. For that, you should interact with the general people,'' said Ramananda Bandopadhyay.

The artist said he had met the Governor on several occasions earlier, and he had always found him keen to learn the problems of the people.

Last year, the people who were invited to the programme included eminent footballer of yesteryears Chuni Goswamy, Purna Das Baul and educationist Bharati Roy.

About a week ago, the Governor gave Rs 1,000 to a rickshaw-puller who was manhandled by the police after he veered into his convoy. The Governor called the rickshaw-puller to Raj Bhavan, apologised to him for the police treatment to him, and gave him the money.
