It seems that the mantra of the Left Front government is to house the urban poor.
Asok Bhattacharya, state minister for urban developement and municipal affairs, expressed concern over the plight of the urban poor and also encouraged participation of the private sector to house the urban poor at the Netaji Indoor Stadium which played a host to the property fair, the "Home Front", organised by CREDAI, Bengal (member of Confederation of Real Estate Developers' Association of India). The minister will also urge the corporation to wave the sanction fee that will facilitate the housing of the urban poor. The minister also pointed out that "two lakh dwelling units will come up at the end of the 11th five year plan."
The minister said: "The housing projects should cater to the needs of the mass and the private sector should come up with proposals to facilitate the lower income group."
The president of CREDAI Bengal, Pradeep Sureka, also echoed the same: "The ultimate measure of the success of public and private partnership can be made if we can provide basic housing for the marginalised section of the society at affordable prices."
CREDAI has also assured their support in realising the objective of social housing.
The minister also expressed concern about the artificial price rise which has taken the market by storm.
Sureka said: "This is a phenomenon which has cropped up in the recent years where an investor gets into the market with the purpose of trading which is the concern of the developers."
The theme of "Home Front" is social housing and there are a total of 40 developers who will showcase their products and thus will offer a wide range of real estates which will cater to all income projects. The minister also said that along with various housing projects, one should also lay emphasis on civil and social infrastructure.
