WITH heavy rains lashing the city since last night, Kolkata recorded a maximum rainfall of 150 mm today. Though it brought respite from the sultry heat, the heavy showers accentuated the problem of waterlogging in the city.
While Jodhpur pumping station alone recorded 150-mm rainfall last night, Pamarbazaar, Thonthonia and Mominpur pumping stations received 85 mm, 45 mm and 100 mm of rainfall, respectively, till early Sunday morning. Pamarbaazar received the highest rainfall of 20 mm till the evening today.
Along with the water pumps used by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), additional portable pumps were also used today to pump out the stagnant water.

We have distributed several portable pumps among the different boroughs. The borough officers have been given the authority to use these pumps in places where water is still accumulated, said Farzana Chowdhuri, member, Mayor-in-Council of the KMC Drainage department.
Several cases of traffic snarls were reported on Sunday morning in Central Avenue, Sarat Bose Road, AJC Bose Road, Minto Park and Camac Street, which remained submerged under knee-deep water.
In spite of efforts by the KMC, stretches of roads remained waterlogged the entire day.
Waterlogging was reported from Hunger-Ford Street, Sahapur, Beckbagan and MM Burman Street, NR Avenue, Bardhoman Road, Gate-5 of CGR Road, Elgin Road, and Sambhunath Pandit Road.
According to the Met department, the city is likely to see no change in the next 24 hours' weather conditions. Thunderstorms accompanied by spells of rain are predicted.
