Behala Agradut club to showcase unique artwork this PujasBy Dr arvind, Section Durga Puja
76-year-old Sonabai has declared a two-month long Puja vacation for her 30 students to whom she teaches Bittichitra, a unique form of wall painting, in Puhupotra village of Chattisgarh. And the unique art form, which is visible on all the walls of her house, has got her an award from the President. This year during the Pujas, Sonabai will be displaying her art in Kolkata but not in any art gallery, but on the walls of a Puja pandal.
Sonabai Rajwar and her 5-member team comprising her son, grandson, their wives and her first student, are in-charge of decorating the pandal of Behala Agradut Club. Spread over an area of 3,500 square feet, the pandal depicts a typical village house surrounded by a courtyard. Sonabai has been busy for the past one month making figures on the walls of the courtyard. There are three distinctive forms which she uses in her art. First is the Jharokha or the jaali work where she makes different kinds of patterns; Second is the relief-form by which she makes trees, animals and flowers and third is the 2D-dancing figures of tribals. Hum hamar ghar ma bhi aeisa hi kaam kart rahat hai, (I have been doing the same work at my house too) said Sonabai. A mixture of clay, bamboo dust, and wood dust is used to make the dough. While the dough and the bulk of the work is done by Sonabai's family, she provides final touches to all the figures. A series of Krishna Leela is drawn on some of the walls. We have all the three forms of tribal dances here. Saga, where tribal boys dance with sticks in their hands; Sagu, a dance performed by tribal girls and Karma, a duet by tribal boys and girls, said Sonabai's son, Durga Prasad Rajwar.
Clay-coated wood has been used to make the walls of the courtyard and wide space is left in between for Sonabai's family members to use it for `jaali' work. Apart from the roof, we are working on every other thing and will start colouring it very soon, said Durga Prasad. The idol would be kept in the house, the walls of which will be decorated. Sonabai would be giving final touches to the idols too. This art form is totally new to Kolkata and it is remarkable that such an old lady has agreed to undertake the arduous task. While browsing through an art book we came to know about her talent, said Debobroto, assistant secretary of the club. Source- TIE, 18-09-06
