After the Battle of Eden, Jagmohan Dalmiya is padding up for a bigger warBy Dr arvind, Section Sports & Fun
For a man not known to make too many friends, Jagmohan Dalmiya has always shown an incredible ability to influence people. He also knows better than most the chemistry between cricket and money. And he taught the world what a combination of this knowledge could achieve.
There is no one on earth to have heard Dalmiya speak only on cricket for a considerable period of time, and appreciate it. Then, there are many among the rich or famous of India, including the rather intolerant Buddha of Bengal, driven crazy by the guile with which Jagguda plays his game. But using some weird trick, the wizard of things wily has had his way on most occasions, barring the BCCI elections last year. Sharad Pawar's men thought and still think that the victory in the Kolkata AGM gave them a chance to nail him forever. Yet, the target of many missiles has shown he is game for at least one last battle against the board that became the richest in the world under his stewardship. The stream of charges brought against the former BCCI boss by those who run the body now, coupled with the relentlessness of this effort to apparently bury him, makes something clear. He would have found himself on the worst of wickets had he not survived the heavy artillery unleashed by the chief minister, police commissioner and Sourav Ganguly (and not in that order) in the CAB elections. Accusations against him made by the men he has antagonised over the years are as serious as allegations of misappropriation of funds to the tune of Rs 40 crore. Dalmiya is serving a sixmonth ban that prohibits him from representing the CAB at the BCCI while the men calling the shots are thinking of harsher measures.
So Dalmiya needed his CAB chair as badly as a man staring at the point of no return does. I needed this platform to clear my name, he said amid reports that he had offered the Commissioner of Police his opponent in the election a deal whereby he could continue for another year as president with some from the rival group also getting a share of the pie. Part of how he swung it in his favour after this offer was rejected is still shrouded in mystery while just how hard it hit some of his detractors was clear in the CM's outburst. Buddha didn't smile but tucked in his den, Dalmiya might have had a quiet laugh. Not only did he make optimum use of the divide in the Left, he also forced reactions unbecoming of persons holding important positions. The kind of oppo sition he was facing meant his defence had to be tighter than the one the Italian football team can think of and on top of that, Dalmiya had to win back the faith of a few significant others too. How astutely he exploited the split within the Left is evident in the fact that he got state sports minister Subhas Chakrabarty by his side. Men close to Dalmiya admit this coup wouldn't have been possible without the state's minister of youth affairs and sports. The evil in Buddha's eyes can hardly savour this triumph. His bigger fight is against those who don't reside close to the Bay of Bengal and this force is far more united and organised than the one he has just overcome. By- Hindustan Times, 05-08-06
