Kolkata gets latest in eye surgeryBy Dr arvind, Section Health
Corrective eye surgery in Kolkata has taken a giant leap forward. People with cylindrical error can now be completely cured of the eye ailment for just Rs 5,000-6,000, thanks to a new technique that made its debut in Kolkata last week.
The method is not only cheap but can also be customised to suit the requirement of each individual patient, even the elderly. Ophthalmologists believe this will revolutionise eye treatment and help people suffering from cylindrical power to get rid of glasses and contact lenses, once and for all. Known as Limbal Relaxing Incision (LRI), the surgery is an intricate and complicated one. A diamond knife is used for the operation that alters the shape of the cornea to get rid of cylindrical power (astigmatism) which can't be treated even by a lens replacement. Pioneered by Dr C H Lowe of Singapore, who was in Kolkata last week to demonstrate the surgical method, LRI is still new in the region. It is not very widely used anywhere in the country. Just a handful of hospitals and eye care centres in Delhi and Mumbai have the facility. But it is the future and the next step of lens replacement, said Dr Partha Biswas of BB Eye Care Foundation that will soon start LRI in Kolkata.
Eyes vary from one person to another. This surgery can be tailor-made to address the specific needs of the patient which makes it far more accurate and effective although lens replacement still has no substitute in correcting spherical power, explained Dr P K Bakshi, consultant with BB Eye Care. A group of surgeons, including Dr Biswas, has trained in LRI in Germany. While an ordinary lens replacement can cost upwards of Rs 10,000, LRI, depending on the kind of surgical instrument used, will cost only between Rs 5,000 and Rs 6,000. And recovery time is virtually nil. The patient can return home the same day and resume work in 24 hours. There are no bandages or stitches. It is painless and has an almost 100% success rate, added Dr Biswas. Some eye surgeons, however, are sceptical. They point out that LRI experiments have not been very successful in India. It is a complicated method that hasn't always produced the desired result. Also, astigmatism need not be corrected at all. Hopefully, they are going to use more sophisticated instruments that will improve the success rate, said eye surgeon Samar Basak. From: The Times Of India, 19-08-06
