Its emphasis on industrialisation apart, the state government is surging ahead to expand IT infrastructure. IT parks are to come up in the city's fringes. One such park has been conceived on a 100 acre plot at Birati, near the NSC Bose international airport.

State IT minister Debesh Das said the plot is owned by a company and its promoter "has shown interest to develop an IT park on it. We are in touch with him to discuss the project cost".

The government is keen on developing IT parks in areas enjoying close connectivity to the airport and national highways. Birati apart, a 50 acre plot has been identified near Madhyamgram where an NRI Bengali businessman Santosh Mukherjee is interested to set up a Rs 1000 crore knowledge valley. Besides, plans to develop IT infrastructure are also afoot at Belghoria, North 24 Parganas and Kalyani, Nadia.

State finance minister Asim Dasgupta recently declared that the state had set a target to attract investments to the tune of Rs 500 crore for industrialisation and development of IT infrastructure in North 24 Parganas alone. Das also said the government is in the process of identifying land at Budge Budge in the city's southern fringe for developing IT industry. An advanced IT park is also coming up on a 100 acre area at Kharagpur.

The IT department is working to bring in more IT and ITES companies in the state. Talks are on with companies such as Asthagen, Sankalp, Max Health Care which have shown an interest in investing in the state. "We want to capitalise on the present situation to attract more and more IT and ITeS companies to the state," said the minister.
