Project To Reduce Congestion Around Howrah StationBy Sumit Kumar, Section News
If you live in south or central Kolkata and cringe at the thought of the long queue for cabs at Howrah Station, there's reason to cheer. If things go according to plan, they won't have to wait for a taxi at Howrah Station after a long train journey. Instead, they can get off at Santragachhi Halt and take a bus or a taxi via the Second Hooghly Bridge.
The transport (planning) wing has drawn up an ambitious bus terminal project at Santragachhi as part of its drive to decongest the traffic in and around Howrah Station. The proposed project has already got a nod from state transport minister Subhas Chakraborty, and the railway ministry has no objection to it either. The state government had approached the railway ministry because the land under the project site belongs to the latter.
"We were given a go-ahead and now, the final plan will be submitted to the authorities in a week," said chief traffic and transportation engineer, B K Sadhu.
The multipurpose project spread over 43 bighas aims at hosting a bus terminal that can accommodate a hundred private and mini-buses at the same time. The project also provides for a private parking space and a taxi stand. This apart, there will be a VIP car park within the terminal complex. However, the department does not want to leave out the cyclists, bikers and autos. Ferry passengers will also have a separate enclosure. Long-distance passengers can also refresh themselves at restaurants and rest rooms included in the project. The terminal also has space for commercial activities and includes a three-star hotel, a shopping plaza and a high-tech dhaba. "Most long-distance trains have a halt at Santragachhi. Many while trying to avoid the traffic in Howrah, disembark there and try to catch other vehicles. There are also traffic jams which affects people travelling from Vidyasagar setu via NH 6. The bus terminal-cum-vehicle stand will reduce congestion and regulate traffic movement. It will offer a more effective truck corridor. Once the Shalimar terminal grows, it will cater to a huge chunk of train passengers". (Source-Times Of India,07/12/06)
