Canada Firm to Invest Rs 450 Cr in Bengal Plant to make Net SurfersBy Sumit Kumar, Section Business
DataWind Corp, a Canada-based manufacturer of hand-held devices, plans to set up a plant here to make surfer boxes, inexpensive devices that can be linked up to a GPRS-enabled mobile handset and a television to surf the internet.
The $100-million company manufactures hand held devices and surfer boxes for internet connectivity. According to Harjinder Singh, the chief executive officer (India operations), total investment would be around Rs 450 crore with a workforce of 1000. "We require a space of 40,000-50,000 sqft," Singh said. He said the project can take shape only if the state government invests around Rs 150 crore.
Singh was in Kolkata to launch `Pocket Surfer', a hand held wireless access device which would make email and Internet surfing easy and inexpensive. "The device, priced at Rs 9,999, is light weight (170gm) and portable. It is the best available Internet access hardware in the market," said Singh. The mobile handset has to have Bluetooth wireless connectivity. "Since we have our own compression technology, the speed of opening web pages is one of the fastest among all the available devices like Blackberry,
Palm Treo and Nokia 9300," he said. In the eastern region, Grameen Sanchar Society (Grasso), a Kolkata-based non-government organisation, has become the distributor of Pocket Surfer. (Source-Indian Express,30/12/06)
