Govt Doles Out New Year Gift to Employees

In a New Year gift to its employees the state government today announced the the release of one instalment of DA which will be equivalent to 4 per cent of the basic pay. Around 10 lakh people comprising government employees, teachers and members of non-teaching staff, employees of civic bodies and public sector undertakings will benefit from this boon that will be effective from January 1, next year.

Four lakh pensioners will also benifit from the government's gift that will cost the exchequer Rs 84 crore for the current financial year and Rs 336 crore for the next financial year.

``With the latest release the rate of payment of DA will increase to 71 per cent. We will again pay two more instalments at the rate of 3 per cent and 5 per cent,'' Asim Dasgupta, minister for finance, who announced the release of DA today said. This year the government released two instalments earlier on July 1 it released 3 per cent and on September 1 it again released 3 per cent.

Dasgupta, however, ruled out the merger of 50 per cent of DA with the basic pay at the moment. ``We are not ready for it now,'' the finance minister said.

Meanwhile, Dasgupta while giving an account of the success of his department in various areas during the last year, said that while in the collection of VAT the growth rate had been 20 per cent, in the receipt of excise revenues, the growth rate this year had been 16 per cent. In the collection of stamp duty also the government has achieved a growth rate of 40 per cent.

The minister also unveiled that the state has plans to put all land records online and the scheme will be launched from March next year.
