Girls outshine boys in Calcutta University's Part 1 examBy Mrs Gupta, Section Education
The results of Calcutta University's Part I examinations, the first under the new system introduced in 2006, was declared on Thursday.
The results showed girls performing better than boys in BA and BSc. However, Mathematics turned out to be weak area with 30.86 percent failure among those who opted for it as a pass subject while the percentage of failure in Hindi as a pass subject was 24.96.This is the first time when students unsuccessful in Part I will qualify for Part II. However, in next year's Part I examination, they will have to clear the paper they failed in. Till last year, if a student failed in any paper, he/she had to repeat an entire year. In BA (honours), 22079 students appeared among whom 99.21 percent qualified for honours in Part II. In BA (general), 97.29 % students qualified for Part II while all BA major students qualified for Part II. For BSc(honours), 96.77 % students qualified while the same for B.A. general was 91.05 percent. In B.Com (honours), 95.55 percent students qualified for Part II, while the pass percentage for B.Com General was 98.53 percent. Under the old system, students had to secure 90 marks in three papers to qualify for it. Under the new system, a candidate needs to secure 23 marks in each of the three papers to qualify for Part II.
