The railway stations and bus stops of the city will soon be witness to a huge congregation of devotees. Nearly three to five lakh people, mostly from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, will converge on the city for the Ganga Sagar Mela. The pilgrims will take a holy dip at the confluence of the Ganga and the Bay of Bengal in the second week of January.

The Ganga Sagar Tirth Yatra Sanyukt Samiti has urged the Kolkata Municipal Corporation to make proper arrangement for the pilgrims. The KMC will set up camps along with the Public Health Engineering department of the state government. The corporation will take steps for the proper maintenance of various ghats which will be the focus of religious activity and fervour. The KMC has promised to supply the pilgrims with adequate water. It will also ensure proper health and sanitation facilities for the pilgrims.

The Ganga Sagar Mela will be held between January 6 to January 18, 2007 with Makar Sankranti on January 14 - considered the most auspicious day for a holy dip. Various NGOs, religious institutions and even the state and Central government extend their support every year for the mela.
