Governor says Grow Flowers and keep Kolkata cleanBy Sumit Kumar, Section Environment
Citizens of Kolkata should take special initiative to maintain cleanliness and protect environment, Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi today said while inaugurating the 53rd Flower Show organised by the Flower Growers' Association of Kolkata held on the lawns of the state Assembly. Speaker Hashim Abdul Halim and minister for forest Ananta Roy were among others present on the occasion.
"We must maintain cleanliness of our city. We must not throw litter on roads and on the premises of our houses. While we should encourage growing flowers we must try to protect our environment," the Governor said. Speaker Hashim Abdul Halim said that growing flowers should be part of the curriculum of schools. "Our children should be taught how to grow flowers in schools. It should be part of the school syllabus," the Speaker today said. He gave an account of how India is earning foreign exchange with flower growers of the city exporting flowers abroad. ``Growing flowers has now got a big economic potential. We are exporting flowers to places like Amsterdam, and other cities of Europe. We are also sending flowers to Middle East''. (Source-Indian Express,23/12/06)
