Ministry to keep tab on land diverted for SEZsBy Dr arvind, Section News
With Singur putting the issue of diversion of farmland for SEZs back in focus, rural development (RD) ministry is moving to create a mechanism to keep a tab on the quantum of agricultural land being lost to commercial ventures. Ministry is mulling to make it mandatory for states to file information on land allocated for SEZs. Significantly, records will have to separately mention agricultural lands diverted for commercial use. It would be followed everytime allotments are made.
Concerns over diversion of farmland to non-farm activities are on top of RD ministry's agenda. It, sources said, plans to ask agriculture ministry to convene a meeting of National Land Use and Conservation Board to discuss the issue. Even as it mobilises its commerce and agriculture counterparts, RD ministry is taking steps to check permanent loss of farmland. A plan with minister Raghuvansh Prasad Singh aims to make a mandatory provision for states to look for wasteland for SEZs and give farmland only in its absence. Significantly, it may make it mandatory for industrial houses to develop wasteland to compensate for any farmland diverted to them. Left gets some support from Cong leaders Akshaya Mukul TOI, 21/12/06
