Calcutta University Campuses to be Linked by Bus ServiceBy Dr arvind, Section Transportation
A bus service between Calcutta University's (CU) 17 campuses is on the cards. It will enable teachers and students of the institution to shuttle between the campuses, including the six major ones of Rajabazar Science College, Ballygunge Science College and College Street campus, Alipore BT Road campus and the Hazra Law college.
Concluding a three-day visit on Wednesday, a 12-member team of the University Grants Commission praised CU and recommended setting up a panel to improve its infrastructure. "They were satisfied with CU's recent performance in various national examinations, facilities offered to students and scholars as well as the new action plan submitted by the university. On the final day, they interacted with senior CU officials," said registrar Samir Bandyopadhyay. They advised establishing a link between the various campuses to facilitate rapid communication. A campus-to-campus bus service will be launched after discussion with the state transport department. "It will be only for teachers, students and people associated with CU. Buses will ply two to three times a day between campuses," added Bandyopadhyay. Hostel amenities, particularly in the one for women, will be upgraded. After touring various campuses of the university, the UGC members expressed concern over the cleanliness of Rajabazar Science College. CU authorities have decided to form a highpowered committee to look into the infrastructure and other facilities on each campus. "A secretary will keep the authorities informed every Friday about the requirements at each campus. It will help us be aware of the problems and needs of every campus," said Bandyopadhyay. Among other recommendations, the UGC team urged the varsity's vice chancellor and registrar to digitise its libraries. The convocation and Ph.D thesis of students should also be digitised, team members said. There are problems of overcrowding which leads to unnecessary delay in CU sales counters. The UGC members said immediate installation of computers is an imperative for better service at the counters. Even the registration for examinations should be done online. CU authorities will speak to different departments and the state government over the next 15 days. From: TOI, DEC-22,06
