Hint of thaw as Guv mediates, PMO Pressure To Resolve Singur Issue FastBy Dr arvind, Section News
The first signs of a thaw in the Singur controversy emerged on Thursday with Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi playing mediator between Mamata Banerjee and chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee. There were indications that the PMO wants the issue to be resolved at the earliest. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is believed to be backing Bhattacharjee on the matter.
Total land acquired: 997.11 acres Consent received before fencing off the land : 620 acres Consent received after fencing: 332 acres (till December 4) Total consent received till date: 954 acres Amartya pat for Buddhadeb The Governor met Mamata on Thursday morning, his second visit to the fasting Trinamul chief, and heard her complaints about the government's "forcible" acquisition of land in Singur. Later in the evening, he handed over Mamata's list of the controversial 387 acres to the CM, who visited him at Raj Bhavan. Bhattacharjee was accompanied by commerce and industries minister Nirupam Sen. Mamata, on her part, responded to the Governor's visit with a climbdown. Unlike earlier, Mamata isn't pressing for dumping the Singur site anymore. Now, she wants the government to give back only those plots that it has acquired "forcibly" from the farmers. With Mamata backing off a little, the onus is now on the chief minister to find a solution along these lines. He is under pressure to resolve the issue at the earliest because he can't keep the Tatas waiting indefinitely. Neither can he hand over the land without lifting Section 144 of CrPC from the area. If he accepts some of Mamata's demands, the Trinamul leader may claim victory, but if the matter remains deadlocked and the Tatas pull out, it will be a severe political blow to the chief minister.
Bhattacharjee may disagree with Mamata's figures, but his government has already conceded in the status paper on Singur that it has acquired 43 acres of farmland without consent. The status paper also reveals that the government got consent for another 332 acres of land between December 1 and 4, after the administration brought the area under Section 144 and fenced off the site on December 1. "Farmers were forced to give consent during this period," said expelled CPM leader Samir Putatunda. Alimuddin Street wants to weigh options at the CPM state secretariat meeting on Friday before the government takes a decision. On Thursday, CPM state secretary Biman Bose met leaders of the Singur zonal committee. "The government can distribute land pattas to marginal farmers rendered landless due to the acquisition. We can give them land pattas in the neighbourhood up to a maximum of three bighas," land and land reforms minister Abdur Rezzak Mollah said.
