Dream opening for budding classical talentsBy Sumit Kumar, Section Events
The city has always been the breeding ground for talents. And as Pandit Ravi Kichlu Golden Talent Contest, in association with The Times of India, returns this year at the GD Birla Sabhagar on December 24, the fraternity once again sits up to welcome aboard a bunch fresh voices to carry forward the legacy of Hindusthani Classical vocal.
The Pt Ravi Kichlu Foundation has always been an encouraging platform for young talents to flourish in various aspects of classical music. Initiated in 1994, after the early demise of Pt Kichlu, the contest has produced some the most promising ambassadors of the Indian art form. One such is the internationally acclaimed sitar player Purbayan Chatterjee. "This was his dream concept," said Veena Kichlu, wife of the late maestro. Apart from providing scholarships to meritorious students, the foundation also looks into the needs of veteran exponents of Indian classical music.
Each year on December 24 Pt Kichlu's birth anniversary two finalists, selected after screening over 800 participants, is given the honour of performing infront of a distinguished panel.
This year too, the finalist in the 10-17 year age group category will perform to a audience consisting of legends like Girija Devi, Jaya Biswas and Namita Chatterjee. The governor is the patron-in-chief of the foundation. Previous year winners, Anindya Mitra and Piu Mukherjee, will also perform in the 18-30 age group category. As special guest, pandit Ulhas Kashalkar, accompanied by pandit Ananda Gopal Bandhopadhyay on tabla, will perform before the august gathering. Earlier, stalwarts like Hari Prasad Chaurasia, Ustad Vilayat Khan, to name a few, have performed at the contest. (Source-Times Of India,21/12/06)
