Dunlop Traffic Project Set To Roll Soon

The Dunlop Traffic Interchange Connectivity Project, hanging fire for years, is all set to get a push now. The state public works department (PWD) will begin re-designing the Rs 100-crore project to ensure best traffic connectivity with the upcoming second Vivekananda Bridge.

Confusion recently prevailed on whether it would be executed by PWD or the state urban development department. This has been cleared with PWD being declared the project’s implementing agency.

Claiming that the “internal problem” has been solved, PWD minister Kshiti Goswami said his department was ready to begin work. Work will be executed under the publicprivate partnership model. The authorities may also bring the project under the National Urban Renewable Mission so that funds are not a problem.

It will have a flyover connecting BT Road with the second Vivekananda Bridge. There will be a ramp connection with BT Road and Belghoria Expressway, too. Vehicles plying along BT Road will be able to take the ramp connection from Dunlop, climb the bridge and then avail of the link with Belghoria Expressway. This will give the second Vivekananda Bridge direct connectivity with NSC Bose International Airport. The authorities will further study technical aspects and design the interchange plan to ensure smooth traffic. The project was conceived over two years ago for connectivity between Vivekananda Bridge and BT Road.

The second Vivekananda Bridge is expected to be completed in a few months. But problems lie at the Dunlop
junction. The bridge will become meaningless unless a flyover with ramp connectivity with the Dunlop interchange is built to carry vehicles from the bridge to Kolkata.

PWD officials said work on the interchange will begin in three months. It will become operational at least a year from the day work starts. Which means the second Vivekananda Bridge will not achieve its full potential till the interchange comes up. Officials feared traffic chaos at the Dunlop junction once work begins.
