City will be home to 4G research labBy Dr arvind, Section Development
Denmark's Wireless Innovation Platform Labs will set up Rs 200-crore center at Rajarhat New Town
Kolkata, the first city in India to get mobile telephony services way back in 1995, will now host the country's first research centre for 4th generation network technology, courtesy a Danish outfit. Although even 3G networks have been set up in only a few places globally and India is still stuck at 2.5G, the world's telecom equipment majors are already looking ahead at 4G. At present, 4G is a broad term covering 3G and beyond. But 4G technology will be required to serve new applications like mobile television, high-definition TV content, multimedia messaging and the availability of voice and data anywhere in the world. In India, 3G networks will be ready within the next two years, allowing much faster and smoother transmission of heavy content like video clips and high-resolution photos and data. At present, Indian mobile services run on 2G and 2.5G networks, in which the radio-wave bandwidth and data speed are not very comfortable with rich multimedia applications. Denmark's Wireless Innovation Platform Labs (WIP), in association with Danish telecom companies and the Danish government, through the participation of Aalborg University, will set up the Rs 200-crore centre. According to Ramjee Prasad, WIP's chairman, the centre will develop applications and technology in the 4G environment.
"In three to four years, we would like to develop 4G patents in areas like access technology, cognitive radio and wireless security," Prasad said. Though the primary focus will be 4G technology, WIP would also look at other mobile technologies. The first patent is expected to be ready by 2008-09, said Prasad. The Kolkata centre will come up in Rajarhat New Town on a 20-acre plot, with an expected investment of Rs 200 crore over the first two years. Though the 4G mobile networks are not expected to be in place before 2012, Prasad believes that equipment-makers like Nokia, Samsung and Siemens are already looking for applications in 4G. "We will work closely with all the major technical institutes of the region from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur to Jadavpur University to employ the best engineers. One of the reasons why we chose Kolkata is the presence of good engineering colleges and universities here," Prasad said. From: The Indian Express, NOV-07,06
