Calcutta High Court on Friday directed the state government to provide all information that one Lakshmi Narayan Mondal sought on the construction of a bridge as soon as possible.
This was the first time that the court heard a case under the Right to Information Act, 2005.
Mondal, secretary of Khanpur Krishi Sech Samanway Samiti, a cooperative of Labhpur in Birbhum district, had complained that the government had flouted the Act by not supplying information within 30 days, about a proposed mini-barrage on the Kue river.
Appearing for Mondal, advocate Chandreyi Alam said the bridge constructed by the Birbhum Zilla Parishad was washed away by a flood two years ago.
Her client wrote to the executive engineer of the irrigation department and enquired about the construction.
But no information was provided, Alam alleged before the court.
The division Bench, after hearing the parties, directed the state to provide information sought by Mondal. Appearing for the state, Amal Baran Chatterjee, promptly handed over all documents containing information sought by Mondal to Alam after coming out of the court.
