The Cabinet clearing construction of expressways covering a total of almost 1,000 km.By Sumit Kumar, Section Roads in Kolkata
Talk about putting India on the fast track. With the Cabinet clearing construction of expressways covering a total of almost 1,000 km, journeys between major points are likely to take much less time. One example: it may soon be faster to travel between Kolkata and Dhanbad by road than by train.
The government is working on constructing high speed toll roads in addition to existing national highways to cut down travelling time. While connectivity with Delhi could improve more than other cities thanks to expressways with Meerut and Jaipur being contemplated other than Chandigarh National Highways Authority of India, which will oversee design and construction of the project, is also going to undertake feasibility studies for Mumbai-Vadodara and Chennai-Bengaluru as part of the stretches being considered. The Mumbai-Vadodara stretch, along with Delhi-Jaipur or Delhi-Chandigarh, may be among the first to be taken up for construction.
"The projects are on the horizon, but all of them may not materialise. The final decision will be based on what findings the feasibility studies throw up," a senior government official said.
Sources said the expressways, planned under the Rs 16,680-crore National Highway Development Programme's sixth phase (NHDPVI), would run parallel to the existing highways and would have underpasses, flyovers and barriers to ensure that cattle and humans do not obstruct high-speed traffic movement. The roads and highways ministry is setting itself an ambitious target of completing the feasibility studies over the next eight to nine months and awarding contracts towards end-2007. Construction is expected to take anywhere between three and four years, an official said. But given the NHAI's track record, sceptics within the government said the proposed target may be difficult to achieve. They pointed out that the expressways planned may not generate adequate traffic to justify additional cost. Besides, land acquisition, which has been a sore point and one of the major reasons for the delay in even the first phase of NHDP, could slow down the ambitious plan. (Source-Times Of India,04/11/06)
