New gas supply to start from June 2007By Dr arvind, Section News
The government-owned Greater Calcutta Gas Supply Corporation, which has been having problems recently with its supply of gas to the customers, is all set to supply gas to two industrial units at Rishra in Hooghly. The tenders for the Rs 13-crore project are being processed after which the pipeline-laying work will be started. The gas supply is expected to start from June next year.
Hindustan National Glass and NGK Birla are the two industrial units concerned who are going to be supplied gas. "All our supplies are made from the Dankuni Coal Complex. After the tenders are processed, the new pipelines will be laid from the complex to individual units. There is going to be a 50-50 share in the investment made," said N Samui, general manager, Greater Calcutta Gas Supply Corporation. The corporation is going to place a demand of one lakh cubic metre of gas from the complex to be supplied to the industrial units. "If this turns out to be a good venture we might start supplying gas in the domestic sector also. We will tap more industries, subject to the availability of gas from Dankuni," said the general manager. Click on "Full Story" for more..
The Greater Calcutta Gas Supply Corporation supplies gas to 5,500 customers in the city which includes the industrial, domestic and commercial sectors. While industrial customers comprise 80 per cent of the total customers, 20 per cent make the domestic and commercial customers. However, in recent times the corporation is facing problems related to the demand and supply in gas.
"There is a supply of 1.20 lakh cubic metre of gas from the complex. But sometimes there are problems in the supply. One of the major problems is that sometimes a couple of industrial units don't need supply for two or more days. This way there is a waste. In such cases it becomes difficult for us to synchronize between demand and supply," said Samui. There are also blockages in the pipelines from time to time. "The gas is sometimes impure and contains sediments of tar. With time, layers of tar clog the lines and the supply breaks for customers. But we try to clean the lines as fast as possible so that the supply resumes. We also make sure to repair the lines in case of any leakages," said the general manager. From: TIE, NOV-21,06
