Post-RTI, Didi demands more on Singur

Trinamool Congress chief, Mamata Banerjee, today said that according to the Right to Information Act, the Left Front government in the state should clear the cloud on the land deal with the Tatas for the company’s small-car manufacturing project at Singur.

“Since the Right to Information has been introduced, the government must disclose details of the land deal with the Tatas,” Banerjee told a party rally today.

She said that the RTI act has empowered people to demand information on the deal from the government.

Banerjee was addressing a rally organised near the Central Blood Bank to protest against the state government’s failure to supply proper medical kits. However, it turned out to be more of a demonstration to protest the government’s land acquisition policies at Singur.

Banerjee criticised the CM’s stand on the land acquisition issue. “Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee is forcibly implementing his policies. The LF government has no respect for democracy,” said Banerjee

Ajit Panja, senior party leader, attended the meeting. “The government is trying to mislead the people with false promises. All the apparently benevolent plans will never work out in reality,” said Panja.

The Left Front partner CPI had recently made a similar demand that government should be more open about the Singur issue.

Claiming that her party had for long cooperated with the state government and maintained peace, Banerjee said the Trinamool Congress would begin “total non-cooperation” from November 5 in support of the farmers who were being “dispossessed” of their land at Singur.

“I will be present at one such non-cooperation programme at Singur,” she said.
