New parking lot near City Centre on the cardsBy Mrs Gupta, Section News
If all goes according to plan, parking your car when you drive down to City Centre will no longer be a headache.
The state urban development department has drawn up a plan to set up a multistorey car park on a plot behind City Centre. “We are working on the plan,” said urban development minister Asok Bhattacharya. This will the first multi-storey car park in the township. The 4-acre plot belongs to the urban development department. Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) is working on the design of the proposed car park. “Talks are on. We have requested the urban development department to hand over the land to us,” said P R Baviskar, KMDA CEO. According to plans, the multi-storeyed parking lot will have a basement and two floors with a space to accommodate around 1000 private vehicles. There will also be adequate space between two cars so people can park and move their vehicles without any hassles. Residents have often complained that the area is chocka-block with cars on weekends. “Cars are often parked right in front of the gates of houses, leading to complete chaos,” said Ashish Mukherjee, a resident of EC Block. At present, City Centre authorities charge parking fees from cars parked on the urban development plot. Recently, mall authorities have signed a one-year contract with Bidhannagar Municipality. According to the contract, the City Centre authorities will pay the civic body Rs 1,00,000 after a year for collecting parking fees from each vehicle.
