Ministers skip flood-ravaged areasBy Mrs Gupta, Section News
A powerpacked team of four state ministers descended on three villages of Murshidabad on Saturday, ostensibly to witness the ravages caused by the recent floods. They, however, skipped the worst flood-affected areas.
Asim Dasgupta, Mortaja Hossein, Subhas Naskar and Anisur Rahman, accompanied by senior Left Front leaders like district CPM secretary Nripen Choudhury, Forward Boc district secretary and MLA Bivas Chakraborty and RSP district secretary Biswanath Banerjee restricted their visit to Sankarghat in Nabagram, Sadole in Khargram and Ranagram in Kandi. They didn't bother with Suti-I, Suti-II, Burwan, Bharatpur, Salar or Kandi, where the situation is precarious. In all three villages, the VVIP convoy was greeted by enthusiastic Front supporters. But, not one flood victim turned up. State finance minister Asim Dasgupta promised to set up a concrete bridge at Sankarghat and legalise electric connection to the mini and shallow pumps in Khargram. After a three-hour visit, the ministers held a meeting with leaders of all parties and district officials. Congress MP Adhir Choudhury alleged that the irrigation department was working without informing the zilla parishad. Dasgupta promised an initial grant of Rs 52 crores in first phase, and supply free rice to the victims. He also assured more loans to farmers. Source- Times Of India, Dated, October-09-2006
