Over 200 roads to get fresh coating

In keeping with chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee's desire to see the city acquire speed, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) is planning to revamp over 200 roads shortly. At the very least, the move is expected to offer citizens a better driving experience.

The civic roads department intends to spend around Rs 90 crore (preferably within the current financial year) in renovating 210 roads across the city. While 150 of these will be layered by the department, 60 major thoroughfares will be covered with mastic asphalt.

The mastic work was carried out with much fanfare by the outgoing Trinamool-led KMC board. As a result, some of the city's thoroughfares that were a nightmare for drivers are now free from pits and potholes. The situation, however, is still grim at many places. This includes roads in the added areas (wards 100-141) that are under KMC's jurisdiction.

The civic body has said that the work of layering 60 roads with mastic asphalt is likely to commence by December this year and will be done by workers on contract.

Among the new stretches that will be covered are portions of Esplanade East. Tuhin Bera, member, mayor-in-council responsible for roads, has said that even those roads where tram tracks have been relaid with concrete will be layered with mastic asphalt.

"On both sides of the tracks that have been re-laid, mastic layering will be done," said Bera.

Bera said that Free School Street that had been repaired during the last Board's tenure, had to be dug out again so that drainage work could be carried out. "We are digging up roads that had been repaired only in special cases. For the roads that have been covered in the second phase, we are ensuring that such works are carried out before repair work is done," said Bera.
