Rework SEZ (special economic zones) project, govt tells RelianceBy Unregistered Visitors, Section News
Things are getting hotter by the day for special economic zones. The government has asked Mukesh Ambani-controlled Reliance group to rework its plan for the Maha Mumbai SEZ on the ground that it will displace a large number of units with linkages to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT).
Besides, the board of approvals (BoA) the singlewindow clearing house for SEZs feels the developers may not need the proposed 10,000 hectares. "We have expressed concerns that too much land is being acquired. We have received several representations and the state government has been asked to review the proposal," commerce secretary G K Pillai told reporters on Wednesday. The state government and Reliance have close to a year for reworking and finalising their proposal. Company executives were unavailable for comment. Click on Full Story....
This comes close on the heels of Sonia Gandhi's words of caution on SEZs and subsequent efforts by Union ministers to dispel the impression that the government was putting out the red carpet for such zones. Reliance SEZ plan runs into rough weather
New Delhi: The board of approvals (BoA) the single-window clearing house for special economic zones has expressed doubts over whether 10,000 acres is needed for the Reliance group's Maha Mumbai project. Unlike some SEZs including Reliance's project in Haryana and Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group's proposal for Dadri in UP where there are concerns of farmer displacement. There is a fear that the Maha Mumbai SEZ may render a large number of non-farmers jobless since they will have to relocate and sever links with JNPT. The Dadri project has been approved in-principle by the government, while the BoA is yet to receive a formal proposal for Mukesh Ambani's Haryana SEZ. Sonia has asked partyruled states to ensure that farmers are not displaced by land acquisition. Now, the BoA's observations have widened the debate to include industrial units.
