Year-end bonanza for IIT-Kgp: 80 new recruiters to vie for grads

The Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur will stun everyone this placement season. At least 80 industry majors, who have not yet recruited from any of the IITs, have confirmed their participation in the placements scheduled to start from December 5.

Among the seven IITs in the country, IIT-Kgp has the largest batch size to be placed this year and aims to successfully place 1,200 students. Institute authorities foresee a sharp rise not only in the highest offers made but also in the average salary offered. As against 140 companies that visited the campus last year, 220 companies have already confirmed participation this year.

The highest salary offered this year is expected to touch Rs 25 lakh per annum, as against Rs 16.75 lakh last year. Again the average salary offered this year is expected to nearly double from last year's Rs 4.5 lakh. Though this salary figure may not look as impressive as those quoted during the placements of IIMs, the figures are extremely encouraging say faculty members. ``One has to remember that IIT-Kgp's policy does not allow foreign recruiters for campus placements. We allow a foreign major only if it is recruiting for its Indian office. Naturally when we quote our highest salary figures they are always in rupee terms," said faculty member and chairperson of the institute's placement cell Gautam Sinha. The highest salaries quoted by the IIMs are those that are offered by corporates for their foreign offices in pounds and dollars.

Among the industry leaders that will visit the campus for the first time are, software giants Adobe, Aztec Software and Hughes Systique, consulting major Deliotte, real estate leader Jones Lang Lasalle, world leader in finance and investment banking Morgan Stanley, global telecom majors Onmobile and Redpine Signals, pharmaceutical company Biological Evans, Tata Bluescope Steel that deals with downstream processing of steel and hydraulic design companies Magma Design, Flomaster.

``We are amazed at the number of new recruiters who have not only confirmed participation in campus placements but have also indicated the salaries they are willing to pay for our students. I expect a large number of students to get salaries beyond Rs 8 lakh. You must remember that these salaries are being offered to 22-yearolds who have just completed their graduation,'' Sinha added.

The institute is also happy that this time there is a healthy mix of companies that are about to visit the campus. Thus, while for the past five years or so, there was an extremely high demand for students of computer science, electronics and telecommunications and IT, this year a large number of companies from the manufacturing sector are also coming to the campus for recruitment. Tata Steel, TVS Motors, Maruti, Hindusthan Zinc, BPCL, IOCL and Reliance have informed the institute of large scale recruitments.
