Tolly studio may be in pvt hands soonBy Dr arvind, Section News
Tollywood stars had taken to the streets in protest, studio technicians had agitated but the privatisation of Technicians' Studio is still on. If an expert committee gives its nod, revamping of the studio could begin in weeks.
On Monday, Zee Telefilms the only company to have submitted a bid for revamping the studio will make a presentation before chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on their plans. This proposal would then be studied by a committee, formed by Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA), and comprising its officials as well as film artistes and other experts in the field. "The panel will look at the technical concept as well as the financial bid," said a government official on Sunday. Tollywood stars, including Soumitra Chatterjee and Prosenjit, had begun an agitation against the privatisation plans but called it off after assurances from the chief minister also the information and cultural affairs minister. Now, the revamp seems well on route. A senior official maintained that Monday's presentation was just an exercise in bringing the company's plans before the chief minister. "However, the acceptance of the plan depends on what the expert committee finally decides," the official added. Click on "Full Story" for more...
While tender papers had been purchased by three companies Zee Telefilms, Bengal Unitech and the Merlin Group only Zee Telefilms submitted the bid. At that point, the government wondered whether Zee Telefilms should be given the work order or fresh bids invited. Later, the government decided that the expert committee would first study Zee Telefilms' proposal and then decide on the matter.
"After the presentation on Monday, the expert committee would go through the technical concept as well as the financial bid, and both would have to be acceptable. As far as the financial bid is concerned, it is important to see what the down payment has been and how much they would pay in instalments," the official added. If the technical concept and the financial bid are not found to be acceptable, the government may invite bids again. Towards the end of July, the state government had invited expression of interest from private companies for the modernisation and running of Technicians' Studio. The government has been incurring huge losses in maintaining the studio. The state government spends Rs 36 lakh to Rs 40 lakh on salaries of employees alone. From: TOI, OCT-16,06
