KMC sends engineers to probe Star leak fiascoBy Mrs Gupta, Section Kolkata Municipal Corporation
The Kolkata Municipal Corporation scrambled to repair Thursday's damage by ordering a team of engineers to examine what had caused the roof of the restored Star Theatre to leak.
As the chief minister sat on stage on Thursday, rain water leaked through the roof and fell on him. A furious Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee first called up mayor Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya and then municipal commissioner Alapan Bandyopadhyay. Both of them were out of town. An angry chief minister later asked the civic administration to set right the leaking roofs. Later, civic authorities decided to send a team of engineers to examine the roof and detect the flaws in its construction. Mayor Bikash Bhattacharya, however, felt that "it was merely an accident" and would not recur. Bhattacharya said that he had asked KMC engineers to ensure that the audience at Star do not suffer in future. However, a section of KMC engineers conceded that since the restored auditorium had not been used for a long time after it was thrown open in October, 2004, maintenance has suffered. This has seen leaks develop in several portions of the revamped theatre, they felt. Local councillor Atin Ghosh said that the theatre should be handed over to an construction firm, which would detect flaws in its restoration. Source- THE TIMES OF INDIA, Dated, October-14,2006
