Dengue spreading in West BengalBy Rajesh Kumar, Section Health
Kolkata: Dengue has further spread its tentacles in West Bengal districts, affecting 136 more persons in the last 24 hours, putting the health administration on its toes.
Altogether 2,161 persons have so far been afflicted by the mosquito-borne disease since its outbreak last month, officials said, adding that Kolkata alone accounted for 1,411 cases. However, the death toll remained static at 19, prompting the administration to claim that preventive steps had been taken firmly to deal with the situation. A team of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Pune, which visited the dengue-affected areas, was scheduled to submit its report to the health department shortly.
City Mayor Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya, who refused to accept state Health Minister Suryakanta Mishra's view that dengue had taken an epidemic turn, however, admitted that 70 per cent of the city areas was dengue-prone.
As per the bulletin issued by the health department, the number of dengue patients include North 24-Parganas district 136, South 24-Parganas 85, Howrah 61, Hooghly 60, Salt Lake 55, Malda 22, Nadia 37, Burdwan 30, Birbhum 26, Murshidabad 10, Midnapore East seven, Midnapore West four, South Dinajpur 11, Bankura two, and one each in Purulia and Darjeeling.
