President Kalam inaugurates herbal garden in Kolkata:-By djain128, Section Health
President A P J Abdul Kalam today inaugurated a medicinal herbal garden inside Raj Bhavan by planting a sapling. Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi, and his wife were also present.
The objective of setting up the herbal garden is to create an awareness about the value of indigenous medicinal plants and popularising their therapeutic use. There are 12 varieties of herbal plants in the garden, including 'Karpur Tulsi', 'Kulekhara', 'Ban Nebu', 'Gurmar', 'Sarpagandha', 'Bach' and 'Brahmi'. The herbal garden is expected to be of interest both to visitors as well as students, while the garden will serve as a conservation, demonstration and propagation centre for some indigenous and endangered species of medicinal plants. Small plots of land at the Raj Bhavan and at Barrackpore have already been earmarked for herbal gardens and beds have accordingly been prepared under the guidance of forest department officials.
After inaugurating the garden, President visited Jadavpur University to attend a function.
Leaving behind the recent days of turmoil and students agitation, the Jadavpur University today reached a new high with President A P J Abdul Kalam rating the institution as the 'true successor' of the ancient Nalanda university in Bihar. Referring to India's rich heritage in learning, Kalam recalled that scholars from 19 countries came to enrich themselves at Nalanda. Praising the quality of research and teaching that has become a hallmark of the university, the President said "Tremendous research is going on, this university. teachers do research and students get to learn from it. This institute is not only a national one, but also an international university". Kalam's words of praise for the university, coming a month after it witnessed a fast by students following a police lathicharge, acted as an elixir for the university with both students and teachers expressing happiness over the President's gesture. West Bengal Governor Golalkrishna Gandhi, State Higher Education Minister Satyasadhan Chakraborty, and Vice-Chancellor of the university A N Basu, were present at the function. (ANI)
