In the latest embezzlement of gram panchayat funds, the police have registered criminal cases against the Sarpanch and secretary of Abdulpur Gram Panchayat under Rajkanika tehsil on the charge of defalcation of government funds.
The registration of case against the Sarpanch Mr Subhash Das and GP secretary-Mr Bijay Das came in the wake of a complaint lodged by the Rajkanika BDO in the local police station.
The official sources told The Statesman that drastic step was initiated after the errant duo ignored the notice for recovery of defalcated sum.

Both the Sarpanch and the secretary had entered into a criminal conspiracy and bungled the food grains for the food for works programme and allocations for the GP godown building. A special audit squad of the state panchayatiraj directorate had earlier detected the bungling of 123.75 quintal of FWP rice. Similarly the audit squad found Rs 93.252 central grants for GP building had been devoured by them.
The Rajkanika panchayat samiti had asked both of them to deposit the laundered government amount by 15 July, 2005 deadline.
Public complaints pertaining to fund bungling are also pouring in from majority of 230 panchayatraj institutions across this district. But the Sarpanch and the secretary never responded to the notice to refund the sum, the sources added. Wide spread embezzlement of GP funds seems to have become the order of the day in this coastal district. At least two-dozen of more cases of this nature are pending before the district administration for adjudication.
