Jadavpur Univ students intensify agitationBy Rajesh Kumar, Section Education
Kolkata's Jadavpur University remained paralysed for the fifth day today as engineering students boycotted semester exams.
The students have been protesting against a police lathicharge on the campus on Friday. "We are boycotting the exams to the protest the authorities' decision to bring the police inside the campus and beating up students who were on a peaceful hunger strike," said Shubhodeep Chatterjee, a student. "The authorities are claiming that we attacked them in 2003. But that was not the case," said Rahul Mitra, another student. Hardening stance The state Chief Minister has indicated that there will be an enquiry into the lathicharge. But, the university as well as students are now hardening their stands.
"We are demanding the resignation of the VC and Registrar, and the withdrawal of the suspension of five students," said Amit Chakraborty, General Secretary, FETSU.
"One must remember that teachers of the university have been mercilessly beaten up, even the controller of exams. The students should at least apologise," said Rajat Bandopadhyay, University Registrar.
The students will now hold a rally in central Kolkata on Thursday, and other colleges have also been invited to participate in the protest.
