Literacy, yoga to combat MaoistsBy Rajesh Kumar, Section Kolkata Police
JHARGRAM: Realising that education can be mightier than firearms in combating Maoist rebels who dominate underdeveloped pockets in West Bengal, police have launched a unique drive to wean people away from the influence of the guerrillas.
Waking up to the reality that firepower alone cannot stop Maoist dominance, policemen engaged in operations against the rebels are opening educational centres in the difficult terrains of Belpahari area in West Midnapore. Six educational centres, to be funded fully by the police department, have been inaugurated by West Midnapore's police chief Ajay Nanda to enlighten people who are influenced by the Maoists because of the area's under-development. The centres, called Sankalpa (meaning resolve), were opened in Belpahari's hilly forest areas of Banguta, Burijhor, Shimulpal, Kokrajhor, Bhangardiha and Banshpahari. Students at the centres were given books and other learning materials free of cost by Nanda. Local educated youth, including women,...
... will be teachers at these centres that will cater to both children and adults.
In Belpahari, where the police are fighting huge odds to combat the Maoists, this is the first such move to befriend the people. Last month, the policemen themselves took lessons in 'pranayama', the yogic breathing practice that boosts concentration. After following the trail of Maoists for about 10 to 15 hours a day in rebel-dominated Belpahari and other forest areas of West Midnapore district, the policemen were left exhausted, both physically and mentally. To lessen stress and strain and to tackle depression caused by frequent failures in their operations, the policemen turned to yoga. West Midnapore is a citadel of the Maoists in West Bengal and police and the civil administration have often been at the receiving end of the rebels' attacks. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/msid-1125984,curpg-2.cms
