Waugh has 'Cricket City' plan for Kolkata

Furthering his business plans, including the setting up of a mega Cricket City, in Kolkata, Australian cricket legend Steve Waugh submitted a master plan of his projects to West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharjee on Friday.

The 'Cricket City', Waugh's dream project, is to be set up on over 400 acres at Rajarhat on the eastern outskirts of the metropolis.

A joint venture between Waugh and Mcquire Bank of Australia, Cricket City could include facilities such as a cricket academy, modern training amenities of international standard for players and coaches, as also accommodation for those arriving in the city on cricket-related activities.

Bhattacharjee said that Waugh had submitted several proposals including setting up of Cricket City.

"We are working on the proposals," he said, after a half hour meeting with the former Australia captain who was part of a five-member delegation of Mcquire Bank.

Waugh said he felt encouraged after meeting Bhattacharjee.

"I have given him a master plan of the Cricket City to him."

Acknowledging his long-standing association with Kolkata due to his close involvement with 'Udayan', a home for children of leprosy patients at Barrackpore, Waugh said he considered Kolkata as his "second home".

Waugh had visited Rajarhat with state Urban Development minister Asok Bhattacharya in February to identify the locale for Cricket City.
