China biz model helped Bengal: Sibley

KOLKATA: US consul-general George Sibley has attributed Left Front's dramatic transition from anti-capitalism to pro-market to the compelling example set by "big brother" China.

Reflecting on municipal affairs minister Asok Bhattacharya's support for fiscal reforms in municipalities to improve their creditworthiness for tapping the capital market, Sibley said the state was following the path that China had successfully treaded.

"The China model has played a big role in shaping the Left's policies. China saw dogmatic Marxism fail. It understood that an open market economy was more effective in delivering benefits to people than a socialist model. China has been pragmatic enough to recognise market mechanism early. West Bengal is doing that now," Sibley said on Tuesday. With just months to go before the end of his term, Sibley termed the experience of tracking the change from close quarters as a fascinating one. In the three years, he had witnessed a fiercely anti-capitalist government embrace the market.

"The economic growth and bullishness that we are witnessing now is a reflection of the pragmatism that the state government has displayed," the consul general remarked.

Though Sibley dismissed the Marxist dogma, he recognised the Marxist government's sincerity towards involving the people in public-private partnerships that it now advocated. Acknowledging political compulsions that slowed down the process now and again, he felt that Bengal's Marxists had recognised the need for job creation and economic growth.
