Blackout blues: State to buy power at a premiumBy Rajesh Kumar, Section Electricity
KOLKATA: Reeling under a severe power crisis following a supply crunch from central utilities, the state government on Tuesday decided to purchase power at a higher price to cope with the situation. Right now, on an average, the state suffers a daily power shortfall of around 350 MW to 400 MW.
The shortfall in the city on Tuesday stood at 150 MW with the CESC getting 160 MW from the state electricity board despite its asking for at least 300 MW. The state government has initiated a dialogue with power trading utilities for purchase of power at a price of Rs 4 per unit; the West Bengal State Electricity Board sells it at a cost of Rs 3.27. "We are negotiating with vendors for procurement of power at higher rates if the need arises. This will cost the government an additional Rs 1.5 crore," power minister Mrinal Banerjee said on Tuesday. The minister said the Centre had assured the government that power from the state's quota would not be diverted to the southern sector.
The state should get an additional 130 MW from the Central sector if it was not diverted, he explained. Banerjee said he had requested the Union power ministry to provide 130 MW to the state for the next five days till the National Thermal Power Corporation's Farakka unit was operational. The unit is now closed because of the shortage of coal.
The government is also trying to procure power from other sources. "Tripura has promised to supply 25 MW to the state. Talks are on with authorities of Haldia Petrochemicals Limited for procurement of power from the company," the minister said.
