US hotel major in 7-star entryBy Rajesh Kumar, Section Business
KOLKATA: A delegation from US hotel chain Marriott International Inc. met chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Friday to discuss the possibility of establishing a seven-star hotel in the city. In the auto front, chairman of Indonesian business group Indo-Mobil, Gunardi Kang, also met Bhattacharjee during the day and expressed his keenness to establish a two-wheeler facility in the state.
The Marriott contingent was accompanied by US consul general George Sibley and NRI businessman Prasun Mukherjee who is trying to facilitate Marriott's entry on the cityscape. The officials of the hotel major made a presentation highlighting their global presence and strengths. Sourcesin the chief minister's secretariat said Bhattacharjee had discussed the strengths of the state for prospective investors. Though Marriott officials did not comment on the outcome of the meeting, Mukherjee claimed that Marriott had asked the chief minister for land. "The CM has promised to look into the issue," Mukherjee said, adding that the proposed investment would be to the tune of nearly Rs 600 crore. "The Indonesian group has promised me that they will start work at Uluberia later this year," Bhattacharjee said.
The Salim-Ciputra combine is also setting up a $330 million township project at West Howrah. The state, of late, has witnessed a flurry of foreign investments, including those from major players like GE Capital, Fritolay and IBM.
The Indonesian team was reportedly scouting for possible sites for their twowheeler facility.
The team visited Uluberia on Thursday, Mukherjee said. The group will require more than 50 acres to set up the proposed twowheeler facility, sources said. The Marriott International hotel portfolio in India currently consists of the 358-room JW Marriott hotel in Mumbai, the 153-room Goa Marriott Resort, the 220- room New Delhi Marriott Hotel, the 286-room Renaissance Mumbai Hotel and Conference Center, and the 179-unit Lakeside Chalet Marriott Executive Apartments.
The 308-room Hyderabad Marriott is expected to open in the middle of the year. A second JW Marriott hotel is slated to come up in Bangalore in 2007.
