BSNL has chalked out a grand plan to make audio-conferencing and videoconferencing facilities available to the common man in Kolkata in a few months.
Deputy director general Rajeev Kumar has written to Calcutta Telephone authorities about this. Calcutta Telephone officials will have to find customer service centres -- part of which will be turned into conferencing centres. Kolkata is among 94 Indian cities to get this facility. Siliguri and Asansol also feature in the list.
The server is being set up at Gurgaon and will be ready by March-end. BSNL subscribers can avail themselves of tele-conferencing facilities through this server for multi-party audio and videoconferences. Audio-conferencing facilities can be availed of by landline and BSNL cellphone users. Video-conferencing will be made accessible through leased lines like integrated service digital network (ISDN) or virtual private network (VPN).
BSNL has begun procuring equipment like video end-points. The devices have in-built voice sensitive and high sensitive cameras for users at various parts of the country. TV sets and computers will be bought locally
