Poddars to set up 100-seat MBBS college in kolkataBy djain128, Section Education KOLKATA: Here is a proposal that the state government will find very difficult to turn down. The B.P. Poddar group is keen to start a medical college in the city and is willing to take up any non-functioning government hospital as the base. The group already has the 220-bed B.P. Poddar Hospital at New Alipore. "We are now seriously considering entering the field of medical education," group chairman Arun Poddar said. "The state government has already cleared our proposal to start a dental college that will be ready next year." The 100-bed dental college is being built at Kamarhati at a cost of Rs 28 crore. For the 100-seat medical college with a 500-bed hospital (as recommended by the Medical Council of India), the group is looking for land in Baruipur (South 24-Parganas) or in the North 24-Parganas. "The state government can also hand over any hospital that is not doing well. It must, however, meet the MCI requirements and should have an area of 25 acres. So far, we have not received any specific proposal from the state," Poddar said, adding that the group would not take more than three years in getting the medical college ready.
B.P. Poddar Hospital superintendent N.D. Manna said the hospital would concentrate on cancer and trauma-care. "We have a tie-up with Mumbai's Tata Memorial Hospital and our doctors will be able to seek advice from specialists there.
